Even more - I love shooting a headshot - and then playing around with some more poses just for fun. I love capturing lots of moods and expressions, and creating different looks for website and personal use. These first two are studio - the third is in the client's home.

Dark on dark, light on light https://pegmccarthyphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/3/dark-on-dark-light-on-light When a certain someone comes to your studio with her ballet dress from her teen years, yes there is a certain amount of WHAT!!!!! I am so jealous - but how can you not love this gorgeous woman and celebrate her beauty. I love to shoot light on light, and dark on dark because using similar tones puts the emphasis where it belongs - on the face. Mary Ellen-5alienMary Ellen-5alien

When We Came From Away https://pegmccarthyphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/when-we-came-from-away What I missed the most when I quit newspaper work was the contact with the community and the chance to hear individual's stories; to be invited into people's homes and be able to photograph them in their own environment. I think that's a big part of why I was so thrilled to be part of the current exhibit at The Art Gallery of Northumberland in celebration of Canada's 150th.

The idea for When We Came From Away, Stories of Arrival, was created by the late DinDin Vallarino of Northumberland County as part of the ongoing work in the County's immigration portal to grow and help sustain newcomer business investment and settlement in the area. The end product is a collection of the stories and photographs of local first, second and third generation immigrants and their most cherished 'artifact'. It's in book form and the images and stories are currently on display at the gallery on the third floor of Victoria Hall.

It was one thing to spend part of the summer meeting and photographing these members of our community, but seeing them all hung together for the first time really took my breath away - along with the work it must have taken to frame and hang in such symmetry. It was incredible to walk around and remember each occasion, each person, family or couple I visited. Every single time I was met with generosity, kindness, time and, chocolate - YES!

We are SO LUCKY to live where we do, to have a community that welcomes diversity, where people can celebrate where they've come from and where they are now. Thank-you to everyone who made this project come to life.

Darkly gorgeous https://pegmccarthyphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/2/darkly-gorgeous These images of a good friend/bodybuilder a week after a big competition are a record of her gorgeous physique and celebrate her hard work. Waiting a few days following the competition allowed the skin dye to lighten, and also a very tiny softening in the definition of the muscle tone. I thought the dark, bronzy look would show off her powerfully feminine lines.

We worked in the studio, which is really private, and for a change, I had to restrict the natural light, using black to soak up the reflection.

Author https://pegmccarthyphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/4/author Okay here's my black and white bias showing again. Author Renny deGroot-MacKinnon came to the studio for a book jacket cover shot and this is what we came up with. I'm not sure which one will end up on the cover but I love all of these, which have a nice connection in her eyes. You can see Renny's work here.

One month to go https://pegmccarthyphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/4/one-month-to-go We shot in the studio, but my favourites from this maternity session are the images we made in the forest. The light never fails to be stunning, and I find it's easier for most people to feel more relaxed and themselves. Can't take a bad shot of these two though - inside or out.

Eight weeks old https://pegmccarthyphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/4/eight-weeks-old My family shoots are always a mixture of formal portraits and life-as-it-is. At two months old, Madelyn was a model. Never fussed once, stayed awake and alert. Eight weeks old is a funny age to shoot - smiles but still pretty topsy-turvy, so most of the posed are being held or propped up. What did she think of the whole process? Not a whole lot!

Here are two collages - one of the portraits, one of the other. Love both styles.

Working man https://pegmccarthyphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/3/working-man

Roger and his Bin-It crew worked hard all day Saturday at their latest clearing job, from frosty, icy morning to an afternoon thaw.

My last wedding https://pegmccarthyphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/3/my-last-wedding

My final wedding shoot was last weekend with my beautiful niece, her guy and two step-daughters. It was frosty outside, so we used the studio for family shots ahead of the ceremony. I love the gorgeous backlight and this wonderful sofa, which is a theatre piece designed by Ken MacDonald that I'm lucky enough to have inherited. This was the perfect ending to shooting hundreds of weddings, as it ended up being just what I want to focus on now - portraits, head shots and family photography.
